چکیده

Background Joint punctures in children require adequate analgesia, sedation or both. Suitable for this are intravenous sedatives (eg propofol, midazolam) and analgetics (eg, ketamine and fentanyl). The use of these substances is safe, but requires an intravenous line, monitoring and followup. Nitrous oxide/oxygen (N2O/O2) sedation has a long-standing history of safety and success. N2O/O2 has analgic and hypnotic quality characteristics. The mask inhalation of a fixed combination of nitrous oxide with 50% oxygen causes a mean analgesia without loss of consciousness or impairment of protective reflexes for the period of inhalation.

Pain reduction in patients after applying a nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture (Livopan) during photodynamic therapy: study protocol for an observational study (Livopan study)

INTRODUCTION Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an effective treatment option for extensively photodamaged skin with multiple actinic kerastosis. However, the main drawback of PDT is the intensive pain experienced during its application, which makes it frequently necessary to interrupt or even terminate the process resulting in incomplete treatment. Several strategies for controlling pain during PDT...

Use of fixed 50% nitrous oxide-oxygen mixture for lumbar punctures in pediatric patients.

To the Editors: A lumbar puncture is one of the most commonly painful procedures performed in pediatric medical practice. Despite evidence to suggest that analgesia and sedation are both efficacious and safe in children, clinical practices do not adhere to these findings. A study carried out in 1993 by Quinn et al showed that 95% of children who had a lumbar puncture performed in a pediatric em...

Efficacy of the laryngeal reflex during oxygen-nitrous oxide sedation (relative analgesia).

The efficacy of the laryngeal reflex during dental treatment in two groups of children was tested using propyliodone 10ml. In 25 children not specially afraid of dental treatment there was no aspiration of radiopaque dye into the larynx or chest. A similar group of 25 anxious children treated using oxygen—nitrous oxide sedation (relative analgesia) were examined in the same way; there was no as...

Prevention of nitrous oxide-induced increases in endotracheal tube cuff pressure.

I read with interest the letter by Brandt (1) in the February edition of your journal. I wish to propose an even simpler method of preventing excessive rise in endotracheal tube cuff pressure during the administration of a nitrous oxide anesthetic. If one simply fills the endotracheal tube cuff with the mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen to be used during anesthesia administration, then there ...

Case-series of nurse-administered nitrous oxide for urinary catheterization in children.

BACKGROUND Children undergoing urologic imaging studies requiring urethral catheterization experience considerable discomfort and psychological distress. Nitrous oxide sedation may mitigate these detriments but the requirement for physician administration has limited the applicability of this technique. METHODS Registered nurses underwent the nitrous oxide training requirements prescribed for...
